4:30 am
new this morning, windy weather wreaking havoc across the bay area from toppled big rigs to falling trees. we'll show you the overnight damage. >> right now we want to show you what san francisco looks like. you can see the winds are whipping on this early monday with the flag flapping in the wind there. we'll be checking the forecast with christina loren on this monday, october 28th. this is "today in the bay." a very good monday morning. 4:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> welcome back. >> thank you so much. >> good to see you. >> it's been a while. >> we've got cheers in the house. >> sweet. >> good morning to you.
4:31 am
i'm marla tellez. jon is off. we begin with a developing story and a high wind advisory overnight in many bay area counties. you can see our camera looking into san francisco bouncing around. strong winds topping 50 miles per hour, knocking down power lines and trees and taking out power to thousands of people. then check out this brand new video. just in to our newsroom, there we go, the strong winds blowing over big rigs and trailers on 580, between livermore and tracy. we are learning one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. take a look at this video out of emeryville. high winds led to a close call. strong winds caused a building facade to collapse on the bay street shopping center last night. it landed on a car, that car had one person inside. >> the occupant driving the red car behind me was in the process of parallel parking and backing
4:32 am
up and the building fell on top of the vehicle. >> the good news is no one was hurt in that collapse. >> take a look at this. antioch, a large tree fell onto a home on west 6th street and the branches pierce through the roof. imagine waking up to that. happened about 7:00 last night. a man was inside that home at the time. crews actually rushed him to the hospital but his condition has not been released. let's hope he's okay. what a surprise that would be. >> let's look at the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. are the winds going to die down? >> good morning to you. welcome back, laura. everybody at home, happy monday to you. the winds are relaxing but i can tell you they are still fierce especially over the open water bridges and through the higher elevations. we tracked the strongest wind gusts in the east bay so one of the areas where we're prone to get that wind if we head throughout the morning hours we're slated to see the wind advisory, expire on time at 5:00 a.m. so. about a half hour from now.
4:33 am
still give yourself extra time to navigate around all of that debris in the road. in campbell the wind was not that fierce. what i can tell you we head throughout the day today our focus is going to shift from the wind to the cold and the potential for showers. we'll detail that coming up. right now let's check on the drive. here is mike inouye. >> great note, the wind and the debris caused by some of the trees blown around. we saw that montage of video t trees down around the bay and right now we're looking across the bay, a clear view. that's one of the results of the wind. nice but we'll watch this span for warnings. none issued by chp. the bay area light. we have the tri-valley, no delays through am livermore. here at vasco road we had an issue. we had a sigalert but it has reopened in the last half hour.
4:34 am
it's better news if you travel out of brentwood and 580. clear again for vasco. >> thank you. 4:34. breaking news out of san jose, police are at the scene of a car crash where a pedestrian was hit and killed. bob redell live in the willow glenn neighborhood. he joins us with the latest. good morning, bob. >> reporter: this took place outside of a town home on wible way in the driveway. a call came in, a 911 call to police. the person here heard somebody crying. when police arrived they found a woman standing by that suv there with the doors open, she's the suspected driver. she has been taken into custody suspected dui because they did find beer cans on the scene and based on her behavior. she is being interviewed. what happened earlier apparently, i don't think you can see the garage door but she somehow backed that suv into the garage door and there was a person who got crushed in the
4:35 am
impact. that person has died. police aren't sure what the relationship is, between that driver and that person or what was going on, what led up to this. but the person who was arrested is a woman in her 20s they believe, and the woman who is dead is a woman who they think could be late 20s, early 30s. they will be out here for a few more hours. apparently they do, again as i was saying, believe that the driver of the suv had been drinking and she has been taken into custody, suspicion of dui. >> thank you, bob. investigators in san francisco are trying to figure out what started a fight that ended with police shooting a gunman. police were called to the marina district to break up a fight between two men yesterday. the witnesses told police they saw one man pistol whipping the other man with a silver handgun. then they say the suspect shot at the victim several times. it's unclear if he was injured. the suspect ran away.
4:36 am
when police caught up with him in a high end neighborhood he pointed the gun at them. >> and then i heard gun shots. i knew it was gun shots because i saw police with guns out and there was about six shots, then i decided to run in the house. i didn't want to be collateral damage. >> several officers fired weapons but it's unclear if the suspect was hit more than once. he was taken to the hospital in serious condition. >> this morning vallejo police searching for a gunman who killed a teenager and wounded seven other people. that happened saturday night on princeton drive, normally quiet part of north vallejo. police say four cars filled with people were headed to a party in vallejo when one of the cars got a flat tire. everyone pulled over, got out to help the driver, and that's when police say a white suv with tinted windows drove by and someone from inside opened fire. >> i was in the living room and i heard a big boom, and i came
4:37 am
outside and there was people trying to fix the broken wheel. and i went back in the house and i heard like 20 some gun shots. i stayed in the house. >> when police got to the scene they found a total of five victims, one of them a 19-year-old dead at the scene. three others later showed up at the hospital with gun shot wounds. those other seven people are expected to survive. a similar scene at a halloween party in sacramento. police say seven people were shot while leaving a party, one of them killed. police say someone driving in a car opened fire. the party was held at a dance studio. this morning police are still on the hunt for the shooter. >> 4:37. emotions are running high in santa rosa following that shooting death of a 13-year-old boy. hundreds of people gathered at a private mortuary in winsor yesterday to pay respects to andy lopez.
4:38 am
last week a sheriff deputy shot the teen seven times killing him. lopez was carrying a replica gun designed to look like an ak-47 assault rifle. authorities say lopez did not follow orders to drop his weapon and instead raised the barrel of the replica toward deputies. there is an independent investigation. >> a redwood city woman is expected in court facing charges of driving drunk for the second time in one year. in the recent case, three children lost their parents. the two were walking their dog thursday night. investigators say 54-year-old marjorie reitzell hit the couple, killing them. police say reitzell had been drinking and will face charges ever dui and gross vehicular manslaughter. >> good morning to you. 4:38. we hope you enjoyed your weekend. let's talk about the winds. good morning. >> good morning to you. welcome back, laura.
4:39 am
hello, marla, everybody at home be prepared for what could be kind of a rough drive to work this morning. we've got really strong wind speeds. i want to show you where we were and where we are. we're talking hurricane force wind gusts through the alta mont pass. we had a gust up to 75 miles per hour. livermore saw a wind gust of 61 miles per hour. it's unusual to get wind this is strong especially this early in the season. right now these are your current wind gusts. the strongest between about 35 and 40 miles per hour which is still strong enough to knock you around in a high-profile vehicle. tractor-trailers, suvs, you want to take it easy. hold on tight to your steering wheel. the winds are calming down so that's the good news. now we have a front coming through we're slated to get a few showers later on today. i'm going to show you where. i wanted to show you we cut your wind speeds sustained speeds in half over the past 12 hours so that's good the news. things are starting to calm down. it's going to be a cold day
4:40 am
across the bay area. make sure you're ready and we'll time out the showers, let you know if your city has a good chance of seeing showers as they pass through the bay area later on. right now let's see how your drive is shaping up. debris on the highway. >> for sure. sometimes on the roadway, then blown off, then back on. watch for those reports as they change. one of the issues here i have to scroll down farther on the report but they did give a wind advisory for the san mateo bridge and for the bay bridge so we're watching both spans. here the san mateo high rise we get our view, the camera shakes quite a bit. the map, we'll see no slowing because of the light, light volume of traffic. be careful as an earlier crash also on 92 right at the 101 interchange, the connector is open and a smooth drive in all directions. we're looking at an easy flow across the dumbarton bridge. that has a high rise so we're watching for the effects of the wind. south the san jose area, 101 is smooth under the 680 interchange. 680 across benicia bridge, there
4:41 am
is a wind advisory issued last night and still in effect but probably might not be such a big deal t winds are changing now. back to you guys. >> something to pay attention to. thank you. still ahead on "today in the bay," apple set to release its earnings later today. >> and speaking of apple the childhood home of steve jobs is up for a special designation. >> plus, a free man, michael jackson's doctor walks out of jail this morning, but does he plan to practice medicine again? the details coming up.

4:48 am
off. that's good news. you see the snow moving through the sierra. they could pick up maybe six inches of fresh powder. so it's early in the season to get into this sort of thing. but we are watching for that. we're going to keep track of that. show you live pictures from tahoe. right now strongest wind speeds are in places like san jose. 16 miles per hour. 18 miles per hour novato. we're down to about the single digits and the sustained speed wile drop off throughout the next couple hours. we do have a wind advisory expire early, about 15 minutes early. it was planning to expire at 5:00 p.m. it's done. so that's good. things are calming down. it's going to be cold today. i want to make sure you're ready for that. 63 degrees in concord, 64 livermore, we'll hit the low 60s in san jose. and we're talking about a return to the upper 50s at the coast. not just today, tomorrow as well. then temperatures start to warm up just in time for halloween. so we're looking good on thursday. mostly cloudy conditions to start the day but a sunny finish. ladies, i was at the winchester
